History of Jewelers of America

Founded in 1906, Jewelers of America began as the American National Retail Jewelers Association, founded by retail jewelers. In 1957, the ANRJA (combined with the National Credit Jewelers Association) became the Retail Jewelers of America (RJA). After officially dropping the "R" to become Jewelers of America, JA merged with JIC (Jewelry Information Center) in 2009, becoming both an industry- and consumer-facing organization. Since its beginning, JA has been dedicated to supporting jewelers—both independents and majors—and being the official resource for trustworthy fine jewelry industry information. To further its mission, Jewelers of America went on to acquire National Jeweler, the trusted source for jewelry industry news, in 2015 and created strategic affiliations with Diamond Council of America (DCA) in 2017 and Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) in 2025.

Supporting the fine jewelry industry

Jewelers of America and our members take strong positions on issues that affect confidence in buying fine jewelry and advocate for professionalism and adherence to high ethical, social and environmental standards throughout all stages of the jewelry supply chain. JA Retailer and Supplier members demonstrate these commitments by signing JA’s Code of Professional Practices and have been at the forefront of key issues that impact the jewelry industry.

As a leading and unified voice of the industry, JA works with a legal counsel in Washington D.C. and alongside other industry organizations to advocate for both the jewelry industry and everyday jewelry purchasers.

Advocacy

Jewelers of America is active in supporting issues in Washington, D.C. that can impact both our members and the consumers they serve. This includes working with other associations, the OECD and the U.S. Department of State to protect the diamond and jewelry supply chain.

Responsible Sourcing

JA and our members have participated – and in some cases taken the lead – on efforts to ensure responsible practices are adhered to throughout the jewelry supply chain, from the mines to the finished pieces. This includes supporting and participating in initiatives that promote best practices for responsible sourcing of diamonds, precious metals and gemstones.

Best Business Practices

Through JA’s Code, members adhere to important guidelines around how to conduct business in an honest and ethical manner. This includes following Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rules around proper disclosure and consumer protections in selling jewelry. JA offers our members key guidance on specific topics including lab-grown diamonds and diamond grading reports.

Jewelry Industry Regulations

JA members must adhere to laws and regulations that impact the jewelry industry. These may include following Anti-Money Laundering Guidelines, government sanctions and measures around the sale of children’s jewelry.
