Leo Ingwer

Leo Ingwer Inc., a family-owned custom diamond jewelry manufacturer located in the heart of New York’s jewelry district, is built on the dreams of its founder and namesake.  When Leo Ingwer began selling metals on 47th Street in 1939, he envisioned future generations of Ingwers crafting elegant diamond jewelry for discerning customers.

Although Leo Ingwer passed away in 2000 at the age of 89, he lived to see a new century for the company. He believed that, “family bonds can be a link to our beginning and a guide to our future,” a corporate ethic that the closely-knit clan of Ingwers, which now runs the company, highlights as its core value.

In today’s customer-driven marketplace, the key to Leo Ingwer Inc.’s success has been to remain true to its business model of being a totally custom diamond jewelry design and manufacturing company. The advantage to design-savvy consumers is that Leo Ingwer Inc. is never locked into a cookie-cutter product line.  For retailers, it means the ability to offer customers fine jewelry that requires no cost or showcase space commitment. When a customer wants a specific diamond engagement ring, a retailer working with Leo Ingwer Inc. can tailor that ring from center stone to mounting, within any price range.

The customizable pieces in the Leo Ingwer collection include engagement rings, wedding bands, matching sets and fine jewelry with diamonds in a variety of cuts, sizes and shapes.  A customer or retailer can use the “4C’s” of diamond buying to select stones for a perfectly designed ring at an acceptable price.

The total custom experience means that each piece of jewelry takes time to design and craft to Leo Ingwer Inc.’s high quality standards.  Company spokesperson Todd Ingwer, diamond jewelry design expert and a third-generation Ingwer, emphasizes, “Not one of our processes is automated or outsourced, which means customers are assured that every piece of Leo Ingwer diamond jewelry has been painstakingly created by expert craftsmen right here in the United States, at our New York City headquarters.”

Customer service also differentiates Leo Ingwer, Inc. from other “custom” jewelry manufacturers.  Fighting the call-center trend that can diminish the value of  business relationships, every transaction is handled personally by a member of the Ingwer family. Todd Ingwer notes, “We’re everyone’s family friend in the diamond business.”

In its commitment to trust and honest value, the diamond business hasn’t changed since Leo Ingwer opened his first street-level location on 47th Street – other than its $6 monthly rent. Leo’s son, Kenny Ingwer, and daughter Shelly Ingwer-Levine are now at the helm , and a third generation of Ingwers are now partners in the company, including Todd Ingwer, Danielle Ingwer Cohen, Ashley Ingwer, Cheryl and Matthew Selig.

The next steps for the company revolve around making the Leo Ingwer name as recognizable to consumers as it is to the trade.  Todd Ingwer notes, “We’re going to let people know that “It’s a Leo Ingwer” means our family stands behind our jewelry design and quality craftsmanship because our grandfather’s name is on every piece.”
