How to get certified:

  • Complete the JA Certified Professional Exam registration form, which includes identifying a proctor.
    • Note that there are two form options, one to register an individual, and one to register 1-10 employees. To register 11 or more employees, contact JA Member Services at 800-223-0673 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
    • Learn more about proctor responsibilities here. *Due to current social distancing regulations, designated proctors are not required to be present during testing. The designated proctor must be an employee of a Jewelers of America Member store.
  • After registration is processed, Jewelers of America will send the proctor (via email) the exam link, password, and instructions for each certification candidate.
  • Proctor and certification candidate then coordinate a time and date to take the exam. Each exam must be taken in one sitting within a two hour time limit. The online exam has a timer and will close when the two-hours has expired.
    • Each candidate is responsible for supplying the necessary supplies to successfully take the exam, which includes an internet-enabled device.
    • Study aids, resources or assistance of any kind are prohibited during the exam.

    • Jewelers of America will email the candidate official results within three (3) business days.  
  • Candidate must pass the test with a minimum grade of 75% within one year of enrollment to receive certification designation. 
    • The date the proctor receives the exam information from Jewelers of America is the enrollment date.
    • Candidates must complete the first attempt within three months of the enrollment date, and have up to two opportunities to pass the exam.


Types of Certification Exams

Sales Professional Certification

Cost: $55 per exam, for Employees of JA Member Stores | $75 per exam, for Non-JA Members 
Exams Available in Two Designations:
  • JA Certified Sales Professional (CSP) Level 1: entry-level jewelry sales personnel with about one year’s experience.
  • JA Certified Senior Sales Professional (CSSP) Level 2: moderate to advanced sales skills and knowledge of a jewelry sales professional. Completion of CSP Level 1 is required.

Management Professional Certification

Cost: $55 per exam, for Employees of JA Member Stores | $75 per exam, for Non-JA Members 
Exams Available in Two Designations:
  • JA Certified Management Professional (CMP) Level 1: entry-level jewelry management personnel with about one year’s experience; reflective of what is commonly needed to manage stores in a multi-unit operation.
  • JA Certified Senior Management Professional (CSMP) Level 2: managers of independently owned stores, who must address concerns such as financing, advertising and pricing. Completion of Level 1 CMP is required.

JA Professional Certification FAQs

Certification exams are taken online. 

Certification candidates will need a proctor to monitor the testing individual. The date your proctor receives the exam is the starting date for your enrollment period, you have three months to take your first attempt. Designate a specific time to begin the two hour test. You have two tries to pass with a 75% within one year of the enrollment date, or your enrollment is invalidated and your fees will be forfeited.

*Due to current social distancing regulations, the designated proctor does not need to be present during testing. The designated proctor does need to be an employee of a Jewelers of America Member store.
Jewelers of America Professional Certification is open to all employees of jewelry stores, specifically jewelry professionals with an interest in professional development: jewelry sales associates, jewelry store managers, owners and other jewelry store employees with at least one year experience. Exams are open for both JA and non-JA Members.

If you are not currently an employee of a Jewelers of America Member store, your company can join to become an active member and get a lower price on exams.
Sales and management professionals may seek certification at either level, but to be certified at Level 2, you must first pass the Level 1 exam.

Experienced sales and management professionals who feel they are ready for Senior Certification may register for both Level 1 and Level 2 exams at one time and take the exams back-to-back. If you pass only the First Level, you will receive certification as a JA Certified Sales Professional or JA Certified Management Professional.

No studying is required! The exams cover facts, processes, procedures, terms and concepts that jewelry professionals encounter in everyday work. Certification testing has two primary goals; the first is to validate what you already know, and the second is to help discover areas in which you can improve.

Professionals may seek certification at any level, but to achieve Senior Certification, you must first pass the Level 1  exams before taking Level 2 exams.
Under normal circumstances, a proctor is required to be present at all times during the exam session(s). Due to social distancing regulations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, designated proctors are not required to be present during testing. The designated proctor needs to be an employee of a Jewelers of America Member store.

Current proctor responsibilities include:
  • Verify certification candidate identification prior to the exam.
  • Receive the exam password and instructions from Jewelers of America and keep them in a secure place.
  • Confirm date and time candidate is taking exam.
  • Distribute the proper password to unlock the exam and do not reveal the password to the candidate prior to sitting this exam.
  • Verify that the student properly logged in.
  • Ensure that no instructional materials or other aids were present in the testing area.
  • Verify that the candidate did not receive assistance during the exam.
  • Ensure that the exam is completed within the two-hour time limit for each level.
  • Record the start and end times for each session on the Time Chart.
  • Report any violations to the JA Membership Department.
  • Sign the Proctor Verification Form once the exam has been completed.

Jewelers of America helps certified professionals share their new status with employers, colleagues, their local community and consumers. 

You’ll receive a certificate, a lapel pin, logos to use in store and online and a press release template to generate positive stories in your local media.
