What does it mean to be responsible?

Does it mean using only certified recycled and repurposed metals? Eliminating waste and hazardous chemicals from a jewelry studio? Knowing the exact origins of all your materials and ensuring that everyone involved in their procurement was fairly compensated? Applying sustainable, environmentally friendly practices? All of the above?

It’s a timely question, since the Federal Trade Commission is set to begin a review of its Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims (aka, the “Green Guides”). It’s also a question without an agreed-upon answer—as we discovered when we checked in with four designers noted for their responsible values.

On the following pages, you’ll see how each views the idea of “responsible design.” Their approaches vary—some begin with the materials and their origins, some look toward the longevity and impact of their creations. But they all have one thing in common: a dedication to ensuring that they’re doing right by the planet and the people who source the materials in their designs. Their efforts are sure to have you thinking about your own views of responsibility and what it means to you.
