Guided by ideas of transformation and precision, Song’s work reflects a deep attention to both artistry and engineering, where beauty, structure, and weability are inseperable.

A fine jewelry designer who specializes in timeless heirlooms crafted with precision and artistry, Stella Song of Irvine, California, was drawn to the “Radiance” theme of the 2025 Jose Hess Design Awards competition.

“Radiance, to me, is the essence of luxury: exceptional craftsmanship, captivating beauty, and an ethereal glow,” says Song. “I was inspired by the butterfly as a universal symbol of metamorphosis, resilience, and renewal—qualities that parallel the human journey toward inner brilliance. Just as a butterfly emerges into the light, so too do we.”

Endeavoring to capture that energy and beauty in gemstone form, Song designed a three-in-one jewelry piece that can be worn as a brooch, pendant, or ring. Crafted in 18k white and rose gold with a titanium-plated backing, the piece features oval-cut blue sapphires (3.872 ctw) from Sri Lanka, 594 fancy color diamonds (18.62 ctw), 42 white diamonds (6.87 ctw), and 211 blue sapphires in various cuts (12.57 ctw). It was critically important to Song, a GIA Jewelry Design & Technology graduate, to use 100 percent natural gemstones in the piece, and designing the color scheme was a central challenge.

“I carefully sorted, with every stone hand-selected for brilliance, size harmony, and precise placement within the overall gradient,” explains Song. “Laying out this complex color gradient—transitioning from warm yellows and champagne tones into vivid blues—required meticulous planning to achieve balance and harmony across the butterfly’s wings.”

With the stones selected, next up was the feat of crafting a fully transformable three-in-one piece. “The engineering challenge was to unite three independent pieces into one harmonious design while maintaining balance, symmetry, and secure interlocking,” says Song. “The friction-lock mechanism between the components required extensive fine-tuning to ensure it was neither too loose (compromising aesthetics) nor too tight (hindering wearability). The joinery and mechanics were designed to withstand repeated use without compromising the delicate visual flow of the butterfly’s silhouette.”

Given the size and weight of the piece, Song selected 18k white and rose gold with a titanium-plated back to provide both durability and a striking visual contrast. Titanium’s strength was essential for a piece of this scale, ensuring comfort and longevity without adding excess weight, while the additional titanium coating also provided a touch of blue—an effect impossible to achieve using only 18k gold.

The fabrication spanned nine months in total: five months of design refinement and four months of manufacturing. Working across time zones with her manufacturing partner demanded constant coordination, CAD adjustments, and gemstone placement trials to ensure the finished piece met both her aesthetic vision and the mechanical requirements for transformability. Every stone was individually selected and placed to maximize brilliance, while also aligning with the curvature and engineering constraints of each component.

In the end, the Radiance Butterfly is not only a celebration of color, sparkle, and transformation, but also a testament to problem-solving, precision engineering, and the spirit of collaboration. It offers its wearer multiple experiences in one jewel—a truly radiant transformation.
