There’s something about a thorough New Year studio cleanup that helps me reset, reassess, and reorganize both my workspace and headspace. A recent snow day provided the perfect opportunity to tackle a huge post-teaching accumulation of burs and bits scattered all over my bench. It was during this cleanup that I came up with a dust-proof, spill-proof, and clutter-proof storage solution using repurposed materials.

I found round magnetic bur blocks for less than $5 each—available from your dentist, a dental supply company, or on Amazon. To locate them online, search for a “28-hole magnetic bur block.”

While digging through the recycling bin, I discovered transparent snack and sorbet jars with lids that match the diameter of the bur blocks. That’s when the lightbulb went off in my head.

I soaked the jars in hot, soapy water to loosen the labels.

A swipe of degreaser followed by a quick wash and dry removed any lingering sticky glue residue.

I used Super Glue to attach each bur block to the inside of a jar lid.

To ensure a strong bond, I weighed the bur blocks down overnight using a heavy chunk of Plume agate.

The design works perfectly—tiny diamond burs and standard 3/32 inch shaft burs stay securely in the bur block, and the magnet helps guide them neatly into their slots.

This spill-proof storage solution makes it easy to quickly assemble job-specific “kits” of attachments. I labeled my diamond carving bur jars by grit number and created additional bur blocks for my favorite polishing, grinding, and sanding combos. No more spilled attachments or dust, fewer items heading to the recycling bin, and the portability of unbreakable lidded jars makes them toolbox friendly, too.
