Where It All Began: Industrial Design

My studio is in an area of Brooklyn with many converted old warehouses, and that industrial environment is often reflected in my work. I’m especially inspired by how nature reclaims the urban landscape. For example, in New York City you can see metal structures turn different colors when exposed to the elements. I love the idea of cities being reclaimed by nature and getting completely overgrown and becoming nature again.

That idea was front of mind when creating my Labyrinth Patina Bracelet. Made of brass, the bracelet has a mixed patina: some of it is natural and some of it is added. I used a pigmented patina that you can buy at specialty stores. I then hand-engraved into the patina so the underlying surface shows up again. The engraved patterns are inspired by Art Deco architecture and abstract art. I like the contrast of perfect Art Deco–inspired shapes and lines with the patina, which is very organic.

Because the bracelet is made of brass, I lined it with felt to make it more comfortable for the wearer. To hold the felt in place, I added little rivets, which fit with the industrial look of the bracelet. Finally, I sealed the piece with lacquer so the brass doesn’t tarnish and to preserve the existing patina.
