Where It All Began: Hail’a

Idesign two ways. When I’m designing for a customer, the design is not necessarily mine; it’s the emotions and dreams of the customer. I try to interpret all of that into jewelry, but the design comes from the soul of the customer. When I’m designing for me, the design comes from the stone. I take a stone and put it in my hand and either it will tell me how it wants to be represented or it will make me remember something.

That’s what happened with this 25.9-carat raw, untreated aquamarine. When I looked at the stone, it reminded me of a long-ago trip to Hawaii. I was on the island of Kauai, looking out from a cliff at the rocks, and there was a pool of incredibly blue water below. When I saw this stone, I took a trip down memory lane. Its color is that of that gorgeous blue water, and the stone’s raw nature is reminiscent of when the wind came and the surf picked up, rippling the surface of the water. And just like that water, light penetrates the stone and creates reflections.

Because of the memories this stone invoked, I knew it would be the prima donna of the ring. The 18k white gold is hammered and steel-brushed to not only match the stone’s raw finish but also not distract from the stone. The bezel has a high polish to separate it from the rest of the shank as it follows the organic curves of the stone.

I pursue uniqueness in my work, and I want to have jewelry that will spark your curiosity. You may like it, you may not like it, but you will look at it. That’s what artists do. They like to force the person who walks by to stop. This ring will do that.
