Treasure Chest: Lauren Harper

This month we asked designer Lauren Harper of Chicago, “What’s the coolest thing in your vault?” Here’s what she had to say.

What’s the coolest thing in your vault?
I recently finished an 18k white gold rose-cut diamond ring that was my first attempt at a bridal piece. It was an inspiring project because I am not at all encumbered by how a typical engagement ring should look.

How long has it been under lock and key?
Actually, the ring’s seven odd-shaped, rose-cut diamonds were in my safe for nearly a decade. At one point, they were each part of a pair of matched stones, but one by one I used half of each pair and was left with these seven diamonds. I recently pulled them out of the safe to admire them, and when they fell into this pear formation, I knew it was time to put them to good use.

This ring is so unexpected. From afar it gives the illusion of being one giant pear-shaped diamond with limitless sparkle, but a second glance makes you realize that it is a collage of perfectly mismatched white diamonds. It is feminine and strong, and will definitely garner a lot of “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that!” compliments, which is always my goal as a designer.

Do you have plans for it?
Honestly, my only plan for this ring is to wear it. It so perfectly captures my style that I can’t imagine selling it. But that doesn’t mean I won’t make something similar to it. I’ll most likely make a few simpler versions of this ring to be the backbone of a future bridal line. But I think it’s safe to say that this one is mine for the foreseeable future!
