Hardness (Age-Hardened) (HV)

• Two-step age hardness: Anneal the casting and quench after the red glow has disappeared; then heat the casting in an oven at 572°F (300°C) for a minimum of 1.5 hours. Remove from the oven and allow to air-cool to room temperature (125 HV).

• Single-step age hardness: Heat the as-cast piece at 572°F (300°C) for a minimum of 1.5 hours. Remove from the oven and either allow to air-cool to room temperature (105 HV) or allow to cool slowly inside the enclosed oven to room temperature (115 HV).

Available Forms

Casting grain

Fusing Possible

Yes

Welding Possible

Yes; use Argentium filler wire.

Quenching Guidelines

It is recommended that, after casting, the flask be left in the casting machine for 3 to 4 minutes before removing, then allowed to cool for 20 minutes in air before quenching.

Special Tips for Working with Alloy

  • Argentium’s recommended flask and metal temperatures should be used as a guide.
  • When torch melting, Argentium displays a paler glow in comparison to traditional sterling silvers when at the same temperature.
  • When re-melting, use 50 percent new metal.
